Editing blog task


Find a film clip on YouTube that you feel has been edited in a distinctive way and write a 750 word analysis of the clip. Use as much media language as you can and try and use the key words we've learned for editing and any other aspects of film language you can apply. 





The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (play from 3 minutes, 30 seconds) is a perfect example of how important editing is for film; It builds up suspense by having straight cuts (an editing technique which is used in almost all films. It allows one shot to suddenly end and the next shot to abruptly come onto the screen. It also allows unnecessary footage to be removed or shortened) to the three characters in the films and then the shots then speed up which makes the viewer more engaged. The music helps build up the intensity of the scene, which could not have been added if it were not for editing. The shots start of being quite distant from the character but then begin to get closer, the change from a medium-close up to an extreme close up can have an important effect on the scene and what the viewer is going to assume as the scene is getting more personal.

Editing lesson catch up (29/11/17)

Task 3 Psycho (1960) directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Discuss the dramatic change in pace achieved by the editing. Dramatic change in pace is achieved by editing because the straight cuts between each clip occurs very frequently, which creates the effect of a fast pace as the film continues. This is achieved post filming by editing because the editor alternates between different camera angles in order to present various angles of the scene. The point where the editing was the fastest in the clip was when the intruder was attempting top stab the woman in the shower, where there were fast straight cut edits between each knife stroke. The pace of the action then slowed down towards the end of the clips when the wounded woman was falling to the floor; the use of editing to slow down the scene emphasised the shock and pain she was in. Analysis Listen to the extracts from The Surgery and Life Hacks above and answer the following questions: 1) What do the titles The Surgery and Life Hacks suggest? The surgery has intellectual suggests, and it also has connotations of digging deeper and getting to the root of a problem.  Life hacks on the other hand suggests something along the lines of helping people in situations and giving tips and tricks for life. 2) How are the programmes constructed to appeal to a youth audience? The background music is quite upbeat and youthful.
