Sound analysis

Funny Games (2001) directed by Michael Haneke.
  1. What is the director saying about the family from the choice of music played?
At the beginning of the clip, classical music was being played, which could suggest that the family are very calm and collected. However, as the clip progresses, the music alternates to hard-rock/punk music which could suggest that as the movie goes on, the family become more aggravated and impatient. The use of punk music could also portray the crazy nature of the family and shows that they are not your normal family.
  2. How would you describe this use of music?
The fist half of the clip, I would describe the classical music as very peaceful. In the second half I would describe the music as very loud and aggressive.
  3. How do you think the narrative might develop?
In the clip, I think the family are going on a little road trip to somewhere where there is a lake, hence the canoe being dragged behind the car. As the movie progresses, I think the child will start to play games on his parents, and they get very irritated with the child, hence the aggressive music.

Clockwork
Orange (1971), directed by Stanley Kubrick.
  1. Discuss the choice of music. Is it the kind of music you would expect for this scene?
In the clip, the men are walking and then the scene breaks out into a fight. However, the classical music being played seems more appropriate for a ball room scene for example, not a scene in which four men are fighting.
  2. Why do you think the director used this piece to go with the action on the screen?
I think the director uses this sound of music for comedic reasons, and to show the audience that it isn't a serious fight, and to make them laugh.

Once Upon A Time In The
West (1968), directed by Sergio Leone.

1.What sounds do you hear? How do they help to build up tension?
During the clip, there is a constant high pitched sound, high pitches noises from animals, heavy wind, water trickling, a dog howling, bones being clicked, buzzing of the bees, and finally the loud sound of the train passing by. They helped to build tension because the audience would be concentrating of those little sounds, and are more likely to give a surprised reaction when the loud sound of the train passes.
2.Can you identify the sound bridge? What is the effect on the audience?
The sound bridge consisted of the main high pitched sound that continues throughout the whole of the scene.

Once Upon A Time In America
(1984), directed by Sergio Leone.

1.Discuss what sound is diegetic and what is non-diegetic.
The diegetic sound includes the music at the beginning of the clip and the phone ringing, however it becomes non-diegetic as the clip moves to another scene, where a sound bridge is also demonstrated.
2.How does the director use the sound of the phone to link the narrative?
The sound of the phone starts at the beginning of the clip and continues right to the end when the phone is picked up, where the scene then reverts back to the man lying down. this could show that the phone call is linked to or about the man, which may foreshadow upcoming events, as the sound of the phone call was very loud and harsh.

In this clip from 'The amazing Spiderman 2', is demonstrates uses of diegetic and non diegetic sound. Diegetic sound is used when the news on the TV is playing however, soft music is also being played over that clip which is non diegetic. Another use of diegetic sound is when the protagonist puts his earphones in and listens to music, because the character is listening to the sound as well as the audience. Half way through the clip, the actor takes out his headphone but the music is stay playing as a voice over which then makes it non diegetic.
