Media Awards

1) Write mini-reviews of your THREE favourite films;

  • My first favourite video was the 'Earthquake' music video made by a GCSE media student. The reason why this was one of my favourite videos is because the cinematography was very well filmed; there were different camera angles from high to lot shots, and from zoomed in to distant shots which gave the video a professional effect and gave the impression that the camera person is very well trained with the camera. Aspects of mis-en-scene were also included such as costumes where the actor was dressed appropriate to suit the genre of the music video. Another aspect is setting; the video was shot in a playground/basketball court which was appropriate because the music is about an earthquake. The editing was the best part of this video because it really convey the narrative of the sound which was about an earthquake; the video was edited to shake and create an earthquake effect when the beat was harsh which really gave a really creative overall effect.
  • Another video that was my favourite was the short film produced by 'click' about an exchange gone wrong. Throughout the video, there was excellent use of cinematography, sound, editing and well as great acting skills from all that appeared in the video. Sound and editing was really effective when gun shots were fired where the sound of the gun was very quick and harsh and the bullets edited in looked very realistic. Also, at the near end of the video, there was a clip in which the characters were in a freeze frame position while one of the actors was still moving, which was done very well. I think this video was meant to be aimed at people who like action/sci-fi movies due to the use of guns and the violence throughout the video. The dominant reading of this video is to show a short film of an exchange that has gone bad, however an oppositional reading could be that the producers are condoning gun use and violence.
  • The last video that really caught my eye was the video where the it started with a young girl lying on the grass with blood smeared around her nose. An aspect that was very well used from mis-en-scene is makeup; the blood around her nose looked very realistic which allowed the audience to connect and relate to her situation. The main part that I really enjoyed during the whole video was the editing in particular because it was very well done and presented; clips of the video were overlapped over each other where they faded into one another which gave a really trippy effect on the eyes. The sound that was edited over the video also fit very well with the genre.
